Male Pelvic Heath and Physical Therapy

Life in Balance Physical Therapy offers comprehensive evaluations and individualized treatment for male patients with issues relating to bowel, bladder, and/or sexual function. This page focuses on the male pelvic floor. Please be aware that we are sensitive to the needs of those persons who don't identify as a woman/man, male/female. Life in Balance is an inclusive practice and we can treat all pelvic floors. 

Treatment options for the conditions listed below are specific to individual patient findings and may include manual soft tissue and joint mobilization techniques, exercise prescription, and patient education. Use of electrical stimulation, biofeedback, and/or internal rectal techniques may be discussed as part of your treatment.

Common diagnoses that may improve with physical therapy

  • ​benign prostate hypertrophy/enlargement (BPH/BPE)
  • chronic nonbacterial prostatitis/painful bladder syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis
  • proctalgia fugax
  • post prostatectomy​
  • overactive pelvic floor muscles
  • weak pelvic floor muscles
  • sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • pudendal neuralgia
  • urinary incontinence (stress, urge, mixed or overflow)
  • fecal incontinence/fecal seepage
  • chronic constipation

Common symptoms that may improve with physical therapy

  • penile, scrotal/testicular, or anal pain
  • post-ejaculatory pain
  • difficulties obtaining and maintaining erection/erectile dysfunction
  • tailbone pain
  • pain with bowel movements​
  • post-vasectomy pain
  • urinary urgency, frequency, leakage or hesitancy
  • loss of contents of bowel or difficulties emptying bowels
  • dribble after urinating 
  • decreased urinary stream or difficulties emptying bladder
